The Butterfly Bang Bar is all about inspiration! Take your fresh bang do’ and try mixing in some fun with hair accessories to change up your daily style…
Think Creatively. Your new favorite headband might already be right in your jewelry case. Find a wrap-around bracelet long enough like this black leather studded one pictured and – voila! No arts and crafts project required. We recommend pairing this with a side or low ponytail with volume at the the crown and wrapping any extra bracelet length around the base of the ponytail. If the buckle fit is not quite right in the back, try tucking in a few hidden pins or clips underneath. We love playful over-sized bows and velvet fabrics that say “holiday” – and jewels and gems with an antique metallic finish throughout the fall and winter season. If you’re skipping the appointment for a flawless hair-up style, we recommend going with not-so-perfect curls or waves, sticking to a more natural look to avoid appearing childlike. Think voluminously with Brigitte Bardot inspired height (far right photo) for the right kind of flirty! Shu Uemura’s “Volume Maker” texturizing powder stick is one of our best secrets to help get the right bump and texture.
glamazondiaries: 30 Second Hair Styles When You’re On The Go
vickifischer: Are you in a time crunch? Always “on-the-go”? Here are some great 30 second tips for “quick & easy” hairstyles!
Favorite Dresses: Blues & Prints
Cool blue hues and interesting prints were a trend on the carpert. We loved the delicate blue colored hues on Zooey Deschanel and Heidi Klum’s flowy gowns and Sofia Vergara’s sleek sea goddess dress in mermaid blue. Retro dress shapes got a modern update with fun prints like those seen on Ariel Winter and Elisabeth Moss. And even Butterfly Studio’s signature orange color made an appearance as Gennifer Goodwin’s accent print – so stunning!
Best Black Dress: January Jones
We thought January Jones made a statement in a great way with this Zac Posen dress. She went for slicked back hair and a bold eye to accessorize her voluminous, eye-catching ensemble. Some felt her look was too strong but we were fans of January’s pick for channeling her inner vixen.
Best Accessory: Emily VanCamp
First off, the intricate detailing on dusty, soft greige made for an amazing dress! Her ribbon bracelet stood out to us as the perfect way to glam up this look with the right amount of sparkle. On her other hand, was a matching ring for subtle embelishment…we’d wear both!
Hair & Makeup
Updos at the Emmy’s were high & tight like the styles on Kerry Washington and Hayden Panettiere. Very clean, neat hair was the carpet DO! For hair worn down, the curl was traded for hair set in soft waves like the ethereal ones on Kat Dennings or the old hollywood glam style turned modern by loose, bedroom waves on Christina Hendricks. The makeup must was matte, healthy skin made pretty with an accented eye or lip but nothing that would take from the wow-effect of any dress.
We were excited to glamify America’s Next Top Model winner Lisa D’Amato for Fashion’s Night Out before her special appearance at Express. Stylist Harmonie Redman and makeup artist Francesca Roman created this look to represent a soft elegance while still showing off Lisa’s fun personality! After salon hours, we headed to the fashion parade on the rambunctious and fashion forward streets of SoHo – stopping in to enjoy music (the Misshapes DJ set at Topshop!), cocktails, and shopping exclusives at stores like Dior, Guess, All Saints, and Michael Kors!
Backstage at NYFW: Butterfly’s Taylor Brock created Bardot-inspired waves with twisted, side-swept bangs for Erin Fetherston. Following the collection’s “femininity with an edge” motif, legendary stylist Odile Gilbert thought to use open zippers for headbands! A simple and creative way to enhance your hair do’ or add interest to your overall look. Kérastase styling products were a must have to create gorgeous shine with just enough control while nourishing, strengthening ingredients worked to save all of the the heat styling and teasing a model’s hair endures during those 7 days!
John Varvatos Launch Party for “The Weapon”
We were front line on the red carpert for John Varvatos’ NYFW party, celebrating the release of his sleek sneaker line for Converse. It was a star-studded affair with glamorous celebs like Daisy Fuentes, Vampire Diaries’ Daniel Gillies, model Lindsay Ellingson, and even Tara Lipinski in attendance. Everyone was dressed for the occasion, but somehow incorporated a rock edge in their ensemble – something Varvatos is known and loved for! Inside of the Varvatos store on Bowery – which happens to be the location of the former CBGBs – gritty rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club emerged on the smoke filled stage to bring rock n roll back for a night with an incredibly explosive performance!
Elle Magazine’s Fashion Week Party: Jill’s Styling Report
The Backstage Secret
To achieve the appearance of the slightest movement in the hair, simple irons were used to create waves. The trick being to keep the ends straight.
Butterfly stylist Jill Guzzo says that the key for the model look was to keep the hair looking natural and go very minimalistic on the styling.
To pull the effortless look together Nectar Thermique by Kérastase for softness, shine, and thermal protection was used and finished with Double Force Hairspray for texture and hold. So casual-chic!
On the Runway at Nanette Lepore
Butterfly client coordinator Amanda got an invite for a fashion trip to remember, being one of the lucky few to witness Nanette Lepore’s Spring 2013 Collection first hand! Beyond the fashion, one of the coolest things about her runway show was electronic dance band Brazilian Girls playing their downtempo, fun beats live on the catwalk as the models walked. Amanda was right on the money – ironically wearing a top that was the right shade of green that day – matching the similar color tone trending in Lepore’s exotic/Asian influenced collection. Alongside the gorgeous greens were pinks, silks, and Lepore’s always pretty prints mixed with lovely, well-tailored black and white pieces to round out the line.
Our talented team of select colorists and stylists recently teamed up with Latina Magazine for their “2012 Makeovers,” transforming these everyday women into editorial models with a touch of Butterfly beauty.
The Nude Lip. Matte or glossy, this huge-for-fall look is soft yet eye-catching and flattering for all complexions. A key tip for the perfect nude lip is to start with a nude liner to give lips definition. You can even use concealer beforehand to white out your lips for the ultimate nude tone. Like a primer, the lip liner helps with keeping color in place. Play with different levels of nude by filling your entire lip in with liner – or to work simply as a smooth and flawless finish. Use a nude pink or beige lipstick that complements your skin tone and apply over liner with a light application – we recommend finding your favorite color in each shade, alternating both or combining the two throughout the season. Another way to never let your nude lip get boring is to use a gloss over your lipstick or liner. Go smoky on the eyes or try a “wet look” using dark shadows, blend well, and you’re all set for glam!
Butterfly makeup artist Francesca Roman created looks for a few of this year’s Met Costume Gala attendees. Here’s the inside scoop on the event’s makeup trends, plus a quick look at our picks for some of the best and worst red carpet decisions!
“The most important accessory of the night was luminous, glowy skin. Being facial fresh, making sure to be well moisturized, is essential for having impeccable skin on a night as big the Met Gala. To wear the healthy look, it’s best to keep the eyelids a nude or frosty shade – even with no eye shadow in some cases – but make the eye pop with lots of mascara and lush lashes. I rimmed eyes with a coal liner pencil and a little of Chanel’s new Illusion D’ombre long wear luminous eye shadow – just enough to define but making sure not to create the effect of a smoky eye to keep with the night’s demand for a natural makeup look. My secret finishing touch for perfect skin – which I just LOVE – is the Soleil Tan De Chanel bronzing makeup base.” – Francesca Roman
Beyonce’s daring, shape-accenting gown made a comeback statement. The dress mixed elements of the evening’s trending styles such as lace trim, feather accents, and a pop of gemstone violet – a very Spring appropriate color. Gweneth Paltrow’s ever-classy simplicity mixed with her playfully alluring dress shape was stunning! Bright neon colors as seen on Kristen Wiig and January Jones were a big hit. Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Camilla Belle, Nina Dobrev, and Justin Timberlake were some of our other favorites while Ana Rubik’s overly revealing slit, Marc Jacobs’ wild number and Kristen Stewart’s clashing patterns were a miss!
Butterfly Studio founder and master stylist Kattia Solano shares her salon favorites – from products to techniques – with InStyle Magazine’s special hair issue, April edition.
Favorite Couple: George Clooney & Stacy Keibler
What a fabulous couple! They were both stunning from head to toe, defining what a star couple should look like – and setting the standard for the red carpet. With Stacy Keibler in a metallic Marchesa dress, the perfectly glamorous couple really sparkled!
Best Dark Colored Dress: Rose Byrne
If you’re going to wear a dark color to an awards show, or even a fancy evening out – this is the way to do it! The navy color of the dress topped with sequins made it very sexy but still refined. Rose Byrne’s hair was perfection. It was just the right length to flatter the feminine cut of her Vivienne Westwood dress. The details of the dress around her shoulders showed just enough skin, leaving the focus on Rose’s hair. The fun part gave her chic blowout a bit of a retro-flapper take and the dangling, long earrings pulled it all together.
Most Statement Making: Rooney Mara
Rooney Mara embodied the night’s theme which was flawless glamor, old Hollywood style. With her lacquered jet black color, vintage-length bangs and pulled back bun, she had a very strong look. The key to her statement ensemble was that her hair was her best accessory. It was extremely shiny, having almost a mirror-like polish. Rooney’s bold hair worked well with the softness of her couture Givenchy gown.
Best Dressed Overall: Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, Gweneth Paltrow & Jessica Chastain
Emma Stone‘s clean and understated updo was well put together. It made the color of her dress really pop! Her flowing Giambattista Valli gown draped her silhouette beautifully and the bow was a playful surprise.
Michelle Williams in bright coral? We love it! Michelle seems to always know how to get a nod for best dressed at events and awards. She keeps it simple, but still manages not to play it too safe. The red Louis Vuitton dress made her skin and hair appear absolutely radiant!
Gwyneth Paltrow was simply elegant in white. The dress definitely looked like it was a Tom Ford garment. We love that the front scooped lower on one side, giving the dress a flirty one-shoulder style. With her hair and makeup very minimal and a luxurious fashion cape shaping the gown, it was effortless and modern.
Black & gold weren’t just colors found at the awards ballroom that night. They were a wow factor on Jessica Chastain‘s Alexander McQueen dress. The embroidery was incredibly intricate and gorgeous – not to mention, studded in $2 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds! The complimentary colors were a sophisticated pair to Jessica’s fair complexion and strawberry blonde hair. She looked great!

Pale Blondes: Tilda Swinton & Evan Rachel Wood
From the cover of W magazine to current beauty and fashion editorials, pale shades of solid color blonde are trending. Tilda Swinton and Evan Rachel Wood both worked the ultra-blonde style with a short, modern haircut – giving retro glamour a fresh take at the golden globes. The stunning look, worn slicked back on Evan and tousled on Tilda, shows that the versatility of this platinum tone pulled together with a sophisticated cut can be styled to make women of all ages look fashion forward.
Back to Red Again: Nicole Kidman
I was so glad to see that Nicole Kidman’s hair color was no longer so blonde. The change to a beautiful strawberry shade suggests that she is slowly going back to her iconic light red hair – which I love! Since Nicole’s makeup was on the natural side, her hair color worked as the best accessory to the embellishments on her perfectly fitted gown. With Evan Rachel Wood recently going from a classic red to the blonde you now see on her, and Nicole going back to red from blonde – it shows just how many fair-skinned women look great with both tones of hair color. Making blondes red is one of my absolute favorite color processes!
When it comes to classic glamour girl, there’s no one like Miss Dita Von Teese! Remember, a simple look that pays tribute to Hollywood Glamour is always sexy.
To create this quick and easy look year round…
– Use a medium, thick liner
– Have well-groomed eyebrows
– Use a soft rose blush
– Red lips – choose a red that suits your skin tone
Butterfly’s Margaux Martinez styled Josie Maran’s “Holiday” campaign shoot on Fashion’s Night Out. Margaux played with five inspiring hairstyles behind a Sephora store front window, with pedestrians looking in from the sidewalk outside. On Josie, Margaux transitioned the following looks from one to the other, which you can try when going from a day to night ensemble during the winter season. You can also pick any one of these easy, stunning looks for a holiday party or festive night out.
Butterfly Signature Blow Dry – Margaux chose a smooth blow out with lots of body as her canvas to help create the effect of beautiful, tousled waves.
Easy Elegance Updo – Go chic in minutes. Create a side part and pull front sections of hair back, away from the face for a half up/half down style. This polished look is great for the occasion when you don’t want to be too casual but also want to keep it simple.
Romantic Updo – A day to night transition from the “Easy Elegance Updo.” Start by pulling pieces from the half up/half down look and pinning them back loosely. Go for softness that is a bit disheveled with this style.
Edgy Ponytail – Start with hair that has lots of texture or volume. Pull hair back loosely with either one or two ponytails (one atop the other) – keeping fullness at the crown. This is a look that is pretty and has a touch of rocker glam.
Wind Blown Locks – Natural texture is key in making this look. Start with hair that is really full, has lots of texture, and has been worn in a pulled back or put up style. After some time, simply take down the hair, allowing it to fall without brushing it out. Shake up the look with your fingertips. Having lots of product in the hair helps keep the texture appear winded.

(Inspiration) This season’s bold trends in fashion and beauty. We thought about color blocking and incorporated it with fall’s biggest color this year – red.
(Before) Amy had solid black hair color with a grown out pixie cut that hadn’t been cut for a year!
(After) Amy now has a shorter, clean cut. About 4 inches of length was taken off from the back to join it with the front for a sexy bob cut. Deep, cherry red highlights were playfully placed in hair, with the red mostly underneath. Depending on where Amy parts her hair, the look can be conservative with less red on one side or more fun when parted the other way.
(Inspiration) We were going for Rihanna’s flirty rock ‘n roll look – with her iconic red hair and short edgy hair style. Among all other colors, red is always statement-making and stands out the most. It says, “Look at me! I’m red and I’m confident!”
(Before) Ania had light brown hair with a one length cut. Her long length covered a section of her hair that had been buzzed off and buried underneath.
(After) Now she’s got an asymmetrical haircut which is short and buzzed on one side, but longer on the other. We chose a beautiful, rich red that could pass for a natural look – but was also bold and daring. The fun color makes the asymmetrical look very easy to wear. Ania loved the drastic, creative look we went for!
(Inspiration) Frida Khalo and the play on masculine and feminine. Also, the inspiring colors of Mexican art.
(Before) Sara: Long, natural red hair that had never been colored, which was almost all one length. Sara was totally open to a new look and gave us no parameters to work within, making her a “dream makeover!”
April: We wanted to go for a big color change with April, and a more subtle styling change. She had been coloring her hair very dark, and with the thickness of her hair combined with the dark hair color, there was no variation in tone.
(After) Sara: Her natural red hair was starting to lose its vibrancy. We enhanced her natural color, giving it back some luster for a more vibrant tone. Her big change was in the length, where we gave her bangs and a shoulder length cut.
April: The color change was drastic – we lightened her hair about 3 shades, bringing it softer in color and more auburn. April wanted to keep her long hair, so a slight change in the way her bangs fell with more layering in her hair now gives it more movement.
