Kattia Solano has spent more than 20 years as a professional stylist in New York and was recently named one of the top four stylists in Manhattan—and the only woman on the list—by Allure magazine. Solano opened Butterfly Studio in 2001 and has since has amassed a devoted following due to her knowledge of hair textures, insight into trends and pop culture, down-to-earth charisma and natural talent.
Throughout her career, she’s created hairstyle for magazine editorials and runways shows, including Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera and Diesel, and is regularly featured in magazines such as Vogue, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and InStyle. L’Oreal appointed Solano the Head Creative Atelier to develop the Shu Umeura Art of Hair collection, giving her creative control over the line—from product development and education to styling and overseeing their major advertising campaigns.
A native of Costa Rica, Solano continuously draws on her family’s tradition of respecting nature and utilizing its healing properties, truly believing that nature is beauty. “I’ve learned to balance nature and technology and I’m most fulfilled when I travel and learn from nature and other cultures,” she says. “The biggest gift we have is to give back to others through action and knowledge. We have the power to create and imagine anything we desire. Live in the moment and enjoy every breath.”
